Case Study: Effluent Flow and Cypress Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Turn-Key Solutions, a BC-based systems integrator, recently installed two SoundWater Cypress Ultrasonic Flowmeters at a small sewage treatment plant in Kelowna, BC. The application was to monitor effluent flowing from the plant to a retaining pond which would later be utilized for spray irrigation.
"This installation was really well suited for ultrasonic. The pipe was very old and they certainly didn't want to cut into it and weld flanges. On top of that, the flow was under high pressure as they were pumping a long distance uphill. They did not want to worry about an inline flowmeter leaking," said Rande Bradsen, CB Process Instrumentation & Controls, Distributor.
The key advantages of ultrasonic flowmeters include installation on the outside the pipe and no contact with the fluid. Therefore, there is no welding required and you don't need to worry about leaks, high pressure, or sanitary health hazards.
In this case, the sewage treatment plant utilized Cypress's built in MODBUS communication to an external HMI readout, and data logging SCADA system to monitor flow. Installing the flowmeters took about five minutes and the total installation time for the entire system was only about 45 minutes for both ultrasonic flowmeters.
“The end user was impressed and will recommend this same solution for future projects including new facilities and upgrades." - Rande Bradsen
